Brothers and sisters

I’m not officially allowed to talk a lot about the animals. However since this blog breaks lots of official rules, and I’d be in a huge trouble if it gets discovered by the house, I figure an occasional story is okay.

It’s fun watching animals with an adult analytic mind. They’re not really my pets but they are under my care during the day and I get to see their personalities in an interesting way.

Two dogs. Different breed but similar ages. One male one female. They get along for the most part, because they have to and they’re dogs. Dogs tend to live a philosophy similar to mine. This is my life so I adapt. Dog can’t complain too much. To us, their barks are all pretty much the same.

Anyway, todays blog was about how the brother really wanted to play. He kept picking up one of the Warren toys that they use as tug of war against each other in a constant battle of who can win.

So every time they younger sister walk by he would pick up the toy and the younger sister would ignore it.

Then moments later when he didn’t have it, she would come over and pick it up and rustle it around loudly so he would rush to grab it and they would tug a war for a while. Now the toy has become unimportant and they just bark at each other for a while.

They tend to bark more when someone’s looking. Like me or Dad. And then it’s over and they go back to doing nothing in the sun.

She sits in his spot declaring a win I suppose although I saw no apparent reason for victory. That must have been a subtlety beyond my capable vision.

Now they are off jointly barking at something new and I have to wait it up to see if it goes on long enough for me to intervene. Apparently dogs are allowed to bark for up to 5 minutes before people in the neighborhood can complain. Luckily these dogs tend to bark in 2 or 3 minutes intervals over the course of an hour.

Just enough to be irritating but legal.

I believe it helps to be oblivious and ignore them rather than give them attention and ask what they’re looking at. It seems to have worked for me. I slept through most of their barking today.

It’s fun to try and put words into their head as they bark. Frequently they’re in different locations and the barking is like a sonar. One barks a single bark and the other barks reply bark. As long as they can hear each other it’s good but if they don’t get a reply bark they bark more. Then they go looking.

After a good bark session they seem to stand alert for a few minutes as if they are waiting to see whether the barking is finished or whether there is more to come. It reminds me of movies where two sides of an argument are standing in a room alert all with guns pointed each other. Inevitably in these scenes, someone shoots first and the whole room start shooting each other before they realize it was just a dropped glass or some other noise. When a dog is alert, almost anything can set it off barking.

I’m glad dogs don’t carry guns.
