While I was writing something else this morning, my mind wandered into a new topic, and it seemed more interesting than the original. So, I decided to start typing. And by typing, I mean talking and having the computer translate into words. I just changed a setting in my voice translation, and we’ll see if it makes a difference. In any case, have I forgotten the topic already? Let me think. Ah, the title of this blog triggered my memory.
The story can trump reality if you’re the one telling it. What I mean by that is if you’re telling a story and nobody else has access to what happened, then the story becomes the reality for everyone. You set the canon; essentially, you are describing a universe that may or may not be accurate, but for all intents and purposes, it becomes the truth. The story is the truth until a better story comes along. This has been a philosophy of mine for a long time, and it’s being played out ironically by a man named Trump. He tells stories, and they become the truth for the people who listen to him. Now, the rest of the world knows that they’re completely **** and made up on the spot in many cases, and even contradict themselves from time to time, but for his followers, it is the truth; it is the reality; it is canon in their universe. It’s different in my universe, but that doesn’t matter. We are all our own universe, and truth is kind of irrelevant.
Needless to say, this upsets a lot of people. Everyone has their own version of the truth, and if you believe it, it is true. Understanding this is a power that can be used for good or evil. We’re seeing it played out reasonably evil right now in American politics. If enough people believe that version of the truth, it could change the United States forever. I have always said the best storytellers win, but I may actually modify that statement to say the best listeners win along with him. Obviously, many people would not mind living in a world where the reality is a story made up by their leader as long as the stories benefit them, and there are a lot of people benefiting from Trump’s crazy stories.
The Republican Party has always benefited the rich business class while pretending to benefit the lower class as well. They present themselves in such a way that a huge portion of the people in the United States sincerely believe it is the party that they benefit most from when, in my view at least, the Democratic Party is the one that believes in benefits for the unemployed and the poor and the homeless and the artists and the people who want education. They just don’t have quality recruiters.
One of the biggest problems with convincing people that they are on the wrong path is their belief. It is very difficult, perhaps the most difficult thing, to change someone’s belief, especially if it is implanted with a good story. People don’t want to be wrong. Religion has done a very good job of convincing people their story was correct and convincing them otherwise seldom ends in success. Parties have done an equally good job of demonizing the opposition in such a way that deciding to switch sides seems like insanity. Religion and politics are both extremely well-crafted systems designed entirely by smart people a long time ago in such a way that not only do you fear the other side but you fear looking like an idiot if you change your mind one day and decide they were right all along, because obviously that means you were wrong all along.
