They say that pigs are supposed to be one of the most intelligent animals in the animal kingdom. I haven’t seen an example of that with my pig. Oops I mean the pig that I take care of during the week, but to be fair there’s not a lot of intelligence that’s needed to sleep and eat and poop and repeat.
This pig doesn’t really have the opportunity to shine. Its life is rather dull and there isn’t much of a need not only to show off your intelligence but to use that intelligence in any way that would show me that you are smart.
That changed today and I’m quite impressed. When I went in at noon to check on the hens, the pig had wrapped itself in my new Superman blanket all by itself. A complete wrapping head to toe as if a human had done it. Is it belittling to say it that way? As if the human had done it? This pig needed to be warm. Today is going to be the coldest day of the year and potentially one of the coldest days in the last decade. The chicken coop is warmer than outside but it’s not warm by any means. We have a heat lamp in there and an electric heater but seeing that the ice hadn’t melted in the water dishes leads me to believe iis t still pretty darn cold.
So after breakfast, the pig went back to sleep as it usually does and found it difficult I suspect. So using just its mouth and perhaps legs for stabilization, it pulled the thbrand-newew fleece blanket up and over its body and then it shuffled around so that the edges were tucked under its weight. Impressive.
To be honest it’s probably even better than I would do since I’m afraid to touch the pig and literally tuck it in. This pig nests better than the chickens it lives with. This pig can put itself in a blanket. Don’t tell the chefs.
It is my new superhero pig, although pigs can’t fly.
