It’s been about seven years since I last posted a subway blog, written while on transit. Back then it would have been on my way to or from my job. It paid the rent, and when it went away, my life changed dramatically. It was two weeks before COVID hit, but usually blame the change on that instead of saying I was fired.
My contract wasn’t really working out and the company couldn’t justify a continual monthly payment for web design and tech support, which I totally understand. The person I was working with on the project didn’t really get along and her total inexperience with the Internet conflicted with my plan and she wasn’t able to clearly express the vision in her head. I created a number of styles trying to match what she described as “clean” and my misinterpreting lead to her eventually giving the entire project to a friend who created a design I would not say was clean at all.
She wanted a design before a plan or a site map which is the wrong way to make a complex website and so it became quite messy as the entire structure went through a dozen navigaton redesigns.
Eventually, nobody was happy including the accountants, so I was told not to renew the contract without notice. That month, I couldn’t make rent and was swiftly evicted from my home as well. My roommate screwed me out of $600 as I had predicted. I could have stuck around and played the COVID card, but that’s not my style. Within 16 days I was out, leaving behind a lot of my things including my father’s hold ring, which might have paid the rent if I’d remembered.
I have not been back to Toronto since. I avoided being homeless 3 times thanks to the kindness of people who knew me and trusted me enough to open their homes to me. Of the three, the first one was probably my favorite and I burned that bridge in 72 days. We have not spoken since.
The camel’s back had to overcome three simultaneous issues and it gave out quickly. I actually did some mental damage I can never fully apologize for.
Next up was a generous offer to live in Niagara Falls with a friend I knew through Kelly. This time it would be me that suffered emotionally, as it pushed major buttons I wasn’t fully prepared for. My entire life I spent trying to avoid being yelled at only to move into a home where being yelled at me because the daily Norm explosive anger often with no trigger it’s possibly the worst environment add to that the way he yelled at his animals and treated him he was a bit of a crazy person not controlled by logic. That would literally fight me if I opposed his insane ideas.
Got worse I felt unsafe and fled all the way to British Columbia to live with his sister her husband whom I barely knew had not had contact with substantially for years. That residency lasted 3 years and deceptively comforted me all the while apparently adding up irritation points because I wasn’t what they expected and no conflict person allergies let it Go on until it didn’t and they came to me and said okay we gave you 3 years now leave. At least they had the kindness to pay for my airfare.
So that’s where I am today living in yet another life expected over gentlemen who has a happy symptom has known me for 40 years as his web designer and support person. Might works taking everybody’s Surprise by 12:00 can last long enough for me to find assistance and probably end up moving to a new city once more where an apartment by myself expensive. I love it if it was rent controlled so but it could finally be my stress free forever home but somehow I believe more crazy adventures to come
He accept and adapt lifestyle. When you let the universe make the decisions get what you get.
