September 1st. Rabbit

I think my brain is a little confused. I’m tired and I’d love to sleep, but I keep taking this medication that among its other effects, it likes to keep me awake. Staying awake when you’re tired makes you tired.

Today is September 1st and my family has a tradition that apparently comes from England where my grandmother was from. We’ve bastardized it into a game, because that’s what I do. Among my close friends and family, someone will be first to say rabbit on the first of every month.

Over the past decade or so as social media has creeped into our everyday lives, the game has changed into posting unusual or interesting pictures of rabbits on September 1st or whatever month it is.

My enthusiasm for being first and sending rabbit messages to a bunch of friends on a list has faded away. I have missed some months completely and other months I just post a picture without an awful lot of energy or labor to find a cool one to make people smile.

Sometimes I find one when it’s not near the first of the month and I save it away with the intention to use it, and then forget that I did that and use some other lame rabbit photo. My sister’s and I use it as a way to communicate with each other at least once every month, or at least that was the goal.

Today I just didn’t feel like it. I felt more like the tortoise than the hare, so that’s what I posted. A picture of the tortoise and the hare hoping none of my nitpicking friends will remind you that a hare and a rabbit are different.

It is a beautiful fall morning though and just now before 9:00 the dogs discovered sunlight and wanted to be a part of that so they barked until I paid them attention and now the three of us are sitting outside in perfect fall weather.

Since I already fed the rooster and his harem at 7:00 a.m., they are not in my way today. This perfect weather for me may be a little chilly for them compared to the heat waves we’ve had here recently.

It’s nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy the weather and the peacefulness without having to keep an eye on my predator. Eventually the dogs will break the silence and… Ironically they started barking just as I was typing this sentence It doesn’t appear to be anything to bark at which means it might be time to go back inside.
