I’m pretty sure I broke the camel’s back recently, and it’s because I took the last straw when mixing metaphors, trying to describe my confused mood. I would love to be able to have the courage to ask what the last straw that broke the camel’s back was for the people I live with. It might have been many things or just one thing that tipped the score board, that forced the change.
It would be easy to say it was drug use, because that’s always a strong contender for roommate incompatibility. It might have been my reaction, or lack thereof, to a theft that happened in the house, breaking a trust and making them spiral into self-doubt. Yeah, I think it was probably that one.
More likely, it was a combination of all of those things accumulating negative thought points. At some moment in time, a casual comment from a friend questioning why I’m here, or tripping over something I have left sitting unfinished at the top of the stairs, or discovering some other issue that, on any other day, would have passed as an inconvenience. On top of everything else, you never know where the last straw is going to come from. As much as I wish I had the nerve to ask, I think it’s probably better for both of us if it remains undiscussed and we go our separate ways.
