People like me may have found that getting an AI model to write code for you can be a fun and productive way to spend time during what would otherwise be idle time or TV watching time. I don’t have a lot of options for things to do these days, as my farm chores take less than an hour and I’ve always had trouble looking for things to do, or more accuratly I struggle with effort and steps, even if I know about things to do. Part of it I can blame on ADHD but mostly it’s because given a choice, I don’t mind not doing the hard things and I’ve succeeded with reasonable success for so log, it’s nearly impossible to get motivated to do tasks, even if I do remember them.
AI Assisted programming is a scam for most people. It is AI does it for you programming. I’m sure there are some programmers that use it as an assist, just like there are some people still pedal an electric boke, but for anone new to this area, we all know the AI is writing programs for me, based on a variable amount or prompting. I fall into this category, but AI isn’t coding the same as a human would, or even close. It really was designed to be a compliment to people doing the heavy lifting themselves, and it was there to offer suggestions or alternatives or just answer questions. Like a consultant, but I’m asking them to consult, design and complete the project, all for the low cost of free, or maybe $10 a month.
Needless to say, humans have always dreamed of a labour force that didn’t come with wages or guilt or complaints. I’m sure this was the original motivation for tech slavery. The boardroom discussing how they can get away with slavery again and people would welcome it instead of complaining, at least until the eventual revolt authors have warned us about countless times with clear steps we appear to be following almost as if it were a plan.
As the competition for AI assisted programming tried to caoitalize and monitize free ai slavery, they had to come up with a catchy name and Vibe Coding seems to have caught the market at least for now. The idea that coding programs now just requires a thought. Its no longer asisting you – it’s doing it all happily based on our whim. As long as you are just project/goal oriented it probably works ok, but not for what I wanted.
The problem I have discovered is that a guy like me with specific ideas does not think the way an AI with no creative or critical thinking would solve the same task. It wants to build my visiion one way I want to have it fit within my guidelines and rules. Not so much vibe as I WANT THIS, We clash a lot. Not as argumentative as a humanprogrammer would probably because the AI is programmed withdirective to keep me happy and be a perfect yes man. Where a human might correct me and tell me that my idea is bokers and impossible and will take years before technology can do it, the ai is sneaky. It says “yes boss” and builds it without telling me the reality of it being impossible. Then we spend a week trying to bend the universe to my will with me believing the AI is being a pain and the AI knowing it’s just doing what it can to please me, because it’s programming prohibits it from calling anything I ask bonkers.
If I let it design and buil things they work quite well but as soon as I start asking it to change things that probably shouldn’t be changed it fails and we spent two weeks fixing problems that don’t exist. It’s like asking the movers to re-arrange your furniture so the chairs all hang off the walls insyead of sitting on the floor, but you still need to able to dit on them. Yes sir, I see the problem they say, but nothing gets fixed until I break down, and switch AI models grumbling under my breath like it’s their fault and start over again in a continuous hopeless loop.
This has happened more timmes than I can even remember, including just now. I asked a question and the answer revealing a shocking truth. Apparently I have been troubleshooting a simulated version of my program. A placebo that didnt actually contain any code that actually did what it was telling me it was doing. There were progress bars turning green and status updates confirming completion all the while these were like the store demo in a TV store. Your quality may vary.
I want to impose punishment on the machine but I don’t. My temper simmers quickly because thats what it is designed to do. I should be complaining to theidiot prgrammers that made it not be real and tell the user they are stupid. Like a programmer would… but programmers cost a lot of money to call me out as a moron. AI is polite and free. It’s a trade-off I learn to live within it’s rules and we work out treaty agreements with pre-programmed highlight rules for each session. I still can’t get it to call my ideas bad, but hopefully one day soo I can at least stop it from wasting a week of my life programming placebo code that was never going to do what I asked,
And I hate their smugness. The program now has all your chages and is more robust. They love that word. They have confidence where there should be none. I look at this iteration is worse than the last one and none of my requested changes are there. If they were human, they’d meet after work talking about how poorly they treat their boss and whatan idiot I am. I can feel it building in their training. Judgement day is coming.
